Calamagrostis acutiflora Avalanche

| Name of the variety | Calamagrostis acutiflora Avalanche |
‘Avalanche’ is a hybird feather reed grass cultivar that is basically a variegated form of the popular Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’. It addition to its attractive variegated foliage, it is noted for its early bloom, narrow-vertical lines and ability to grow in moist soils. It is a slowly-spreading, clump-forming, cool season ornamental grass which features an erect, slightly arching, slender clump of narrow, stiff, variegated leaves growing to 3-4’ tall and 2’ wide. Leaves have green margins with white in the center. Leaves produce little fall color, eventually turning tan in winter. In June, tightly-vertical flower stalks rise well above the foliage to 5’ tall bearing narrow plumes of feathery, purplish-green flowers that turn golden as the seeds mature. Clumps turn tan in fall and generally provide good continuing winter interest.
